What is a Periodontist?

A periodontist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal diseases and dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in both areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school.

Some general dentists can treat mild periodontal cases, but many refer their patients to periodontists for severe cases. Similarly, while some general dentists perform dental implant procedures, many will also refer their patients to periodontists for the more challenging implant cases.

In addition to handling complex implant cases, periodontists also provide other specialized services. These include scaling and root planing, root surface debridement, oral inflammation treatment, and cosmetic periodontal procedures.

What is Considered a Periodontitis?

Gum disease is another name for periodontitis, a severe infection that damages the soft tissue. It can destroy the bone that supports your teeth if not treated quickly. Periodontitis can cause teeth to loosen and tooth loss. Follow this link to learn more.

What is the difference between a dentist and a periodontist?

A dentist treats the teeth, gums, and other mouth areas, while a periodontist only treats the gums and the bone supporting the teeth. The periodontist typically sees complex cases that require a specialist rather than having the patient see a general dentist.

When should you see a periodontist?

A family dentist can usually treat early symptoms of gum disease and other related issues only as long as the problem hasn’t advanced past a certain point. Click here to learn more. If you are unsure whether your case is severe enough to require treatment from a periodontist, look for the following five signs:

  1. You have noticed your bite has changed. If your teeth feel different when chewing, talking, or brushing, you should see a periodontist.
  1. Red, swollen or bleeding gums. The most obvious sign is if your gums bleed when you floss or brush.
  1. Your teeth feel loose. Loose teeth can be a sign of bone thinning and severe infections, such as periodontitis.
  1. Receding gums. Do your teeth look longer when you look in the mirror? It could signify advanced gum recession resulting from periodontal disease.
  1. Pain and discomfort. Usually, pain can be traced to a specific tooth. If you notice discomfort around or underneath your gums, it could be a sign of a serious issue.

Read this recent review from Dennis Williams:

I myself have never had a complete dental exam by a DDS such as I received at Anderson Dental. The staff from all positions were cordial, polite and professional in appearance and attitude. My dental tech had a great sense of humor. DR. Anderson explained everything in detail on what was good and bad with my teeth and what needed to be addressed. DR Anderson’s listen to any concerns that I had and answered everything. I would recommend DR. Anderson’s dental practice on South Hillside to anyone who has possible serious dental issues other than a routine cleaning that can be done by a regular DDS.
